Fermenting Fun in Bayview
Explore a burgeoning craft beer scene at this month's Bayview Drink SF Beer shuttle, as host venue Ferment.Drink.Repeat (1439A Egbert Ave.) holds educational sessions on brewing and each participating brewery releases a celebratory dark beer.
At 6:30pm, the #DrinkSFBeer shuttle kicks in, looping between Ferment.Drink.Repeat, Barebottle Brewing Co., Laughing Monk Brewing Co. and Seven Stills Brewery & Distillery (actually Seven Stills is right next door to Laughing Monk). Note: Speakeasy's tasting room has not yet re-opened to the public and will _not_ be a stop on this route.
Ferment.Drink.Repeat -- or FDR as it's colloquially referred to -- turned a year old this summer, making it the 2nd oldest on this route, which features new generation SF breweries. (Laughing Monk, the route's elder, is an ancient 1.5 years old.)
Launched by Kevin and Shea Inglin, FDR first set roots as a homebrew shop as they built out the brewery -- and it remains a great place to learn to brew. In addition to enjoying FDR brews and frequent live music in the tasting room, the Inglins still run the homebrew shop and host educational sessions and brews days, generously offering time and expertise to the community as they share their passion for craft beer.
Starting at 7pm, Kevin will be showcasing both the neighborhood and the season for a fun multi-part Brewer Q&A at FDR:
Fresh Hops Here - Beer's Superstar Ingredient and How to Brew with Them
Fresh hops are a rare seasonal treat -- the window to use freshly picked hop cones is exceedingly small (and happens to be right now!), and how they are handled in the brewing process can pose a challenge for unfamiliar brewers. Join FDR for this educational session about fresh hops, and learn about FDR's new fresh hop release, Hyper-local Fresh Hop Ale and the upcoming Portola Garden Tour, where many of the hops used in this beer were grown. FDR will be pouring tasting samples of this highly limited beer during the discussion in addition to offering pints for sale at the bar.
Explore the Brewmuda Triangle
Brewers from Bayview, Bernal Heights and Portola -- aka the Brewmuda Triangle -- will reveal new dark beer releases brewed specifically for this Sept. 20 Drink SF Beer shuttle. FDR will briefly talk about the styles being showcased and share secrets of dark malt brewing. To try these brews, visit the respective breweries on the shuttle route:
Ferment.Drink.Repeat - Darkside Saison
Dark Saison - 7% ABV, 20 IBUs
Come to the Darkside and enjoy the crisp, dry, spicy notes of a traditional Saison, hidden in the depths of a dark soul. Pilsner malt base and Styrian Goldings hops set the tone for the GigaYeast Saison #1 yeast to shine. Close your eyes, and you won't know it's dark! Pairing: Burgers, tacos
Barebottle Brewing Co. - Midnight Cologne
Dark Kolsch-style Ale - 4.1% ABV, 20 IBUs
A dark version of our California Cologne Kolsch-Style Ale.
Pairing: Just about anything.
Laughing Monk Brewing Co. - Blackberry Pulpit
Black Tripel - 7.6% ABV, 15 IBU
Classic Belgian style Tripel brewed with Blackberries and midnight wheat malt.
Seven Stills Brewery & Distillery - Star Panther
Sour Saison - 7.4% ABV, 13 IBU
Clove spice, citrus, grain forward, dry finish.
Pairing: Cambozola Cheese
Brewery & Homebrew Shop Tour
Kevin will wrap up with a tour of his brewery's setup and in-house homebrew shop.
Oakland's funk / soul band Trace Repeat will provide live music following the tour, with El Taquero's taco stand out front to fill the belly.
The #DrinkSFBeer shuttle is FREE, with shuttles looping between FDR, Barebottle, Laughing Monk and Seven Stills nonstop until 10:30pm. Just hop on, hop off at any stop (no need to reserve a seat); shuttles should pull up at each venue every 5-10 min.
